We finish off this column with a biography of our new Region 3 Director, Dave Julius, Bar J Bar Ranch, Box Elder, SD.

My wife, Carla, and I got into the Colored business about ten years ago.  At that point we already had three breeds of sheep including Columbias, Rambouillets, and Suffolks.  Carla had always been a craft enthusiasts and enjoyed spinning, weaving, and knitting and without much coaxing convinced me to try some Coloreds.  With the help of a respected breeder in Oregon we acquired his pick of a Colored flock that was dispersing.  This initial purchase was basically Rambouillet and some Merino and so had some very nice fine fleeces.  We experimented with some Columbia and had some success but have since decided to stay a little more focused on fine fleeces.  Our first National Natural Colored show was at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival.  We exhibited 6 head and had the first and fourth jr ram lambs, first fall ram lamb, first and second fall ewe lambs, and first yearling ram and champion and supreme champion over all breeds.  We have exhibited 2 champion and 2 reserve champion rams at the Midwest sale.  Last year at the Great Lakes sale we had the first and second place ewe lambs and high selling Coloreds at $750 and $500.  And now we are even more excited about our future as Tor Sorensen allowed us to lease the ram which was champion at Louisville and has sired two supreme champions at Loisville including a ewe for Tor and a ram lamb for Doug Gehring this past fall.  In addition we acquired last year's Midwest champion.  To witness the number of juniors exhibiting at Louisville in the junior show tells me there is a real future for the Natural Colored breed.
